I Am Legend (Widescreen) (2 Disc Edition w/Limited Edition Steelbook Packaging + Digital Copy of Film)

The movie, I Am Legend starring Will Smith, is based somewhat loosely on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name. Now, most people don't know who Richard Matheson is, but this is the writer who influenced both Stephen King and Dean Koontz where they were teenagers, not to mention thousands of other kids, myself included. This was the man who wrote some of the most famous Twilight Zone episodes of the sixties, especially Nightmare at Thirty Thousand Feet. This is the author of the famous horror novel, Hell House, which was also turned into a film. Flipping the coin over, Matheson is author of the famous romance novel, Bid Time Return, and this was also turned into a major motion picture, though most people know it as Somewhere In Time. There's also the novel and movie, What Dreams May Come. Richard Matheson is therefore one of the greatest writers of the last half of the Twentieth Century. Without him, we might not have had Stephen King and Dean Koontz writing such brilliant books. I Am Legend with Will Smith is the third adaptation of Matheson's novel, and Mr. Smith does a truly excellent job of portraying the lead character Robert Neville, capturing his aloneness and near insanity at being quite possibly the only human being alive. Neville was the military doctor experimenting with new drugs and viruses in the hope of finding a cure for cancer. What was discovered, however, wiped out most of the human population, while changing those still alive into flesh-eating zombies, or vampires, that move at a tremendous speed and seemed to be filled with an incurable amount of rage and violence. Because the creatures can't survive in the sunlight, Neville has control of the day when he and his German Shepard go out hunting for food and raiding the nearby DVD store. Neville is also still searching for a vaccine that will cure the symptoms of the virus. He uses zombies that he's captured, and the testing usually results in their deaths. The night, however, is totally controlled by the creatures, and Neville must always be home by dark in order to barricade himself inside his Washington Square apartment with its reinforced doors and window shutters. In time a confrontation is inevitable between Neville and the creatures, and this in turn eventually escalates into a full-blown battle at between life and death at the end. I had mixed feeling about the movie when I first saw it at the theater. When the Two-Disc Special Edition came out, I found myself enjoying the longer alternate version with a different ending. I think the director, Francis Lawrence, and the Special Effects people did a fabulous job of creating New York City a few years down the road after the plague has done its nasty work, showing the desolate streets with non-moving cars and trash lining the curbs and weeds growing out of the pavement. And, Will Smith, plays perfectly to this setting, creating a character that is near the end of his rope and talks to mannequins in the DVD store as a way of keeping himself from going crazy, then goes berserk when one of the mannequins shows up in a different location. Unlike a lot of viewers, I loved the creatures. The scene where Smith has to go into the basement of a bank to find his dog and runs into a group of them standing together in a group had me dropping popcorn all over my lap. I felt myself in the darkness with him as well as the strong fear that he was experiencing. This is definitely one of the best horror scenes done in the last few years. I believe the Two-Disc Special Edition with a longer version of the film and an alternate ending is the way to go. I do have to say that other than a different version of the movie, there isn't much else offered that I cared about. The makers of the DVD set could've done a feature on the long history of I Am Legend with an in-depth interview from Richard Matheson and a more detailed look at the making of the film. That will probably come in a later edition somewhere down the road. Anyway, this is a good, fun movie with some superb acting by Will Smith.

I've been a fan of Richard Matheson's 'I Am Legend' for many years. It's not a story that fits with popular film canons, it REALLY isn't. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but suffice it to say, the novelty of the ending works great on the page, but would probably have people storming the box office to get their money back as a film. But every so often, seemingly about every 20 years, it gets made into a movie, anyway. So what can you take from the book that WORKS? The desolation of a lone survivor in a great empty city.. the eerie beauty of that kindof place and what that life would be. For this viewer this film nailed it. No, it's not a slugfest, an action-packed thrillride.. No, Will Smith is not chewing a cigar and firing off one-liners to no-one for 2 hours (thank goodness- one can only imagine how this film would have played like with Arnold Schwarzeneggar, the original choice for the lead). So, what it IS is a stoic, QUIET observation of one person and a dog against a vividly empty Manhattan. I say vividly because the CGI erasure of people used in this film is one the nicest understated effects I've seen used in a sci-fi film in many a year. The vampires of the original story have been given a reasonable (if predictable) update, and CGI is used extensively to give them a jumpy, feral quality. If CGI makes them less believable, it at least succeeds in making them very unhuman, and the de-evolution aspect of these creatures makes this vision more isolating (and genuinely sad) than perhaps it should be. Will Smith knocked me out in this film. It's nothing more than a meditation on remaining hopeful and holding together, and he evokes a big range of emotion with hardly a word. No higher praise. As a sci-fi enthusiast, I'd give it 5 stars, but there's no way to resolve the ending of this story. The original ending is an ironic slap in the face to the reader, the Omega Man nails Heston/Jesus to a cross, and this film tries to find a hopeful middle ground, but it just doesn't satisfy... to their credit they had an alternate ending that gives the story a stronger humanist slant, and it's interesting, but even less satisfying than the one they chose to use. **EDIT** (I take my last comment back------I have since seen the blu-ray release with the alternate ending intact and feel it's a much better film, a better character study, and a better resolution.. though it raises more questions about Neville's motives for finding a cure that fall outside of the simple hero story) So, yes, it flops in the last 3 minutes, but it's the journey thru that stark beautiful city that you hope we don't live to see that makes it worth it.

The I Am Legend Ultimate Collector's Edition is, in every sense of the word, legendary. The movie is hard to explain. Some people hated it, some people loved it. I saw this set for $9.99 at my local Giant Tiger, on DVD, and that was the inception of the idea, that I wanted this set. I went home and checked Amazon to see if it was there, for cheap. I knew it wasn't going to be $9.99 because it's on Bluray. When I found out it was only $23 without taxes I was freaking out. I had previously checked the US site, because they are usually cheaper, and found out it was $59.99. So, I ordered it. The Movie - Experience, Audio, and Video. I loved this movie when I saw it back in 2008. The quiet scenes are really haunting, making you feel lonely. The movie closely follows Neville (Will Smith) and his dog. The things that happen to him and his dog are sad, funny, and overwhelming. When things start up, it never lets go of the tension. I Am Legend does not seem like a movie that may be funny, but there are a couple scenes. When Neville goes into a grocery store near the beginning of the film, he talks to the mannequin's, asking for advice in whether or not he should approach the female mannequin. The film like this does not need comic relief, and usually ruins the film, but this films deal's with this carefully. It is really smartly packed into the movie. The alternative ending gives you closure, where the other makes you feel depressing, but both endings are amazing. I really love this movie. The quality on this bluray is top-notch. The bluray transfer is perfect compared to some of the releases near the beginning of I Am Legend's release. The mustang Neville drives in the beginning of the film is detailed in every shot, and is amazing to watch. The lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound matches the video. Perfect. I love re-releases that actually benefit the movie. The sound compliment's the beautiful picture quality greatly. The Packaging and Content: The packaging is really cool. The artwork is fantastic on the box, and the order the items were placed it beautiful as well. The art book, the photos, the case, and the lenticular are all packed in nicely. My only complaint is that the bluray casing is the same size as the DVD so does not suit all my bluray's. I do not mind too much, because I'd like to keep it in the box anyway's. The extra features are extensive too. The focus points on the main bluray is very thorough and informative. The extra features are really awesome, and the addition of the alternative version (more notably the alternate ending) is very spectacular. Overall: Movie: 5/5 Video: 5/5 Audio: 5/5 Extras: 5/5 Packaging, Items/Price: 5/5 Overall, the package is worth the money. It's initial release would have been more around $60, but for what you get, I would have still paid full price. The movie is awesome, video quality is spectacular, and the audio is immersive. The extras are thorough and extensive. If you liked the movie, pick up this set! It is worth the $25 bucks. I love the movie, this set, and the MINOR flaws (not a bluray case) are over whelmed by the amazing advantages.

I Am Legend Star Rating for Video and Audio Quality. Movie Rating 6/10 This film has its flaws, and seems to have gotten a lot of positive feedback as well as negative, but personally, I have to give it a positive review. Die Erde, im Jahre 2012 (eigentlich in naher Zukunft gedacht): ein mutiertes, vorher gentechnisch verändertes Masern-Virus, das eigentlich zur zu 100 % erfolgreichen Krebstherapie eingesetzt wurde, hat sage und schreibe 5,4 Milliarden Menschen getötet. Die verbliebenen 600 Millionen Menschen wurden bis auf etwa 12 Millionen Immune durch die Erkrankung zu einer Art Vampire, die die Immunen nach und nach ausmerzten. In menschenleeren Manhattan forscht der ehemalige Militärarzt Robert Neville noch immer an einem Gegenmittel, um die verbliebenen Infizierten zu heilen; dabei immer Gefahr laufend, von den nachtaktiven Wesen entdeckt zu werden.. Na, wenn das mal keine zeitlich vorweggenommene Parabel auf die momentane Corona-Situation ist.. „I Am Legend“ basiert auf dem bereits mehrfach verfilmten Roman „Ich bin Legende“ von Richard Matheson und zeigt uns eine Welt, in der eine Geschichte um eine tödliche Pandemie konsequent weitergesponnen wird und die uns gar nicht mal so unglaubwürdig zeigt, wie sich weitere Mutationen auswirken könnten. Francis Lawrence gelingen dabei besonders zu Beginn eindrucksvolle und bedrückende Bilder eines New Yorks, das langsam von der Natur zurückerobert wird. Will Smith zeigt in dem Film, über weiteste Strecken eine One Man Show, mit seinem Schauspiel, dass er weit mehr kann als den Klassenclown (wie in „Der Prinz von Bel Air“) oder den coolen Cop in „Bad Boys“. „I Am Legend“ gelingt es erschreckend glaubwürdig, ein fiktives, aber meines Erachtens durchaus denkbares „Finale“ einer tödlichen Pandemie aufzuzeigen. Dabei helfen verschiedene Filmschnipsel aus Nachrichtensendungen und Dokumentationen, um der Story zu einem sich auch echt anfühlenden Realismus zu verhelfen. Noch ein wenig mehr Realismus wäre wohl zu erzielen gewesen, wenn man die Infizierten nicht als übermenschlich starke, schmerzfreie und superschnelle CGI-Figuren dargestellt hätte, sondern als Kranke, die den Immunen nach dem Leben trachten. Das nimmt einigen Szenen etwas den Realismus, mindert aber die Spannung nicht. "I Am Legend" ist aber durchaus auch kritisch, etwa wenn der Neuzugang erkennen muss, dass Neville eine Vielzahl Infizierter für seine Versuche geopfert hat. Das Ende ist absolut konsequent und deprimierend, wenngleich der Zuschauer einen Hoffnungsschimmer erkennen darf. Ich persönliche ziehe das alternative Ende der damaligen DVD-Version vor. Das Bild der Blu-ray ist sehr gut ausgefallen. Das Bild bietet recht viele Details und ist auch stets schön scharf. Die Farben sind natürlich gehalten. Kontrast, Schwarzwert und Plastizität: alles top. Die UHD kann da meines Erachtens nur wenig draufsetzen. Zeigte besonders der Beginn auch bei der Blu schon eine tolle Schärfe und sehr viele Details, so kann die UHD hier nur eine kleine Sandkasten-Schippe drauflegen. Der Kontrast und der Schwarzwert sind bei der UHD minimal besser. Auffällig sind relativ häufige, leichte Randunschärfen, die schon mal die Schriften auf Plakaten oder Wänden ordentlich zerfasern. Der Track liegt leider, wie bei der Blu, lediglich in Dolby Digital vor. Es ist eine Schande, dass hier beim Transfer auf das modernste Speichermedium mit dem potentiell besten Bild eine veraltete Tonspur aufgespielt wurde. Nun ist Dolby Digital nicht per se wegen des Kürzels schlecht; die Abmischung macht den Ton, aber hier ist der Sound schlicht und ergreifend enttäuschend: zu leise, zu undynamisch, zu bassarm. Direktionale Effekte sind ebenfalls so leise, dass man schon sehr genau hinhören muss. Die angegebenen Parameter werden erst brauchbar, wenn man ordentlich am Gasgriff dreht. Was wäre hier soundtechnisch möglich gewesen; ich denke nur an direktionale Effekte im ausgestorbenen Manhattan oder eine die Atmosphäre fördernde Surroundkulisse während der Szene im vollkommen dunklen Infiziertenhaus. Schade, ich vergebe gerade mal zwei Trotz-Balken. Extras habe ich wie meist nicht angesehen, ich vergebe die Mittelwertung. Mein persönliches Fazit: „I Am Legend“ lässt auch 14 Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen immer noch sehr gut ansehen; Will Smith wächst hier schauspielerisch über sich hinaus. Der Film ist brandaktueller denn je und malt natürlich den sprichwörtlichen Teufel an die Wand; das zwar etwas effekthascherische, aber dadurch nicht minder erschreckende Szenario der weltweiten Ausbreitung eines wirklich letalen Virus muss man sich nun nicht mehr selbst ausdenken. Zum momentanen Preis kann man über einen Austausch der Blu gegen die UHD nachdenken, über einen Erstkauf des Films sowieso; beim „normalen“ Preis für eine UHD will eine Neuanschaffung wohlüberlegt sein: dafür ist die Technik einfach nicht gut genug.
